Since the triumph of the Revolution in 1959, fighting to eradicate illiteracy in Cuba and increasing people’s literacy were the first milestones intended to deliver culture to the Cuban population, pursuant to the legacy of our National Hero Jose Marti, “Be cultivated to be free”. Later on, more concrete efforts were made for certain media, due to their reach, to become direct ways to teach certain subjects and even to make up for lack of teachers for some subjects. This experience therefore summarizes two important revolutionary criteria: opening the gates to wisdom for all society and putting the most modern communication and information technology at the service of such a noble purpose.

The project UNIVERSITY FOR THE PEOPLE is one of the programs that, resulting from the Battle of Ideas our people is currently waging, is being carried out in order to contribute to socializing access to knowledge. Our best professionals, college professors, scientists and technicians in a wide range of specialties have been involved in developing the courses of University for the People. Millions of tabloids with the basic contents of the subjects taught have been printed, which has been welcomed very well by our people, who are increasingly learning and increasing their cultural level.

All given as well as forthcoming courses have environmental dimension added to their contents. Also, specific courses on environmental issues have been prepared due to the importance and attention the State attaches to environmental protection, which definitely has repercussions on the people’s life quality.

Course on Cuban protected areas and natural heritage conservation

So as to achieve efficient protection and conservation of nature and its associated historical and cultural values and resources, it is necessary to encourage special protection of ecosystems and natural habitats being home to high or fragile genetic diversity, of species, of evolutionary processes and genetic resources.

This is mainly why protected areas are set up; interrelated protected areas constitute a system making it possible to fulfill certain conservation goals at the national level, thus contributing to national sustainable development in the environmental, economic and social areas.

History and repercussion of a discovery. Spatial structure of the DNA molecule

The discovery of the DNA structure (1953) and genetic code deciphering gave rise to a series of applied research in the 1960s. Molecular Biology became important and those technologies applied to the study of the different life dimensions came to be at the topmost level. Since the 1970s, the most important field of biotechnology came to be the so-called Genetic Engineering
