1946 - Manuel García-Garófalo y Mesa passes away
Manuel García-Garófalo was one of he continuators of the Cuban bibliographical research and cataloguing begun in mid-19th Century by Antonio Bachiller y Morales. Constraining himself to his home province, García-Garófalo published a Diccionario de Seudónimos de escritores, poetas y periodistas villaclareños (Dictionary of Pseudonyms of writers, poets and journalists from Las Villas). He took a Doctorate of Civil and Notarial Law at the University of Havana. He was appointed secretary, counselor and chargé d’affaires of the Cuban diplomatic representations in London, Paris, Santo Domingo and Mexico. He collaborated with different newspapers. He was the author of biographical abstracts about Plácido, Heredia, Marta Abreu and Miguel Jerónimo Gutiérrez.
2005 - Doctor Rosa Elena Simeón Negrín is posthumously conferred the 2005 National Environment Award
With her constant, dedicated and selfless work, Doctor Rosa Elena Simeón Negrín contributed very much to strengthening the concepts of sustainability and environmental awareness among Cubans. Her work is inseparably linked to the development of the Environmental System in Cuba, Doctor Rosa Elena playing a main role in its conception, development and maturation: formerly as President of the Cuban Academy of Sciences since early 1985, then and as Minister of Science, Technology and Environment from 1994 until she passed away; and as Chairman of the National Commission for Environment Protection and Rational Use of Natural Resources (COMARNA). She developed and implemented the National Strategies for Environment, Environmental Education and Biological Diversity and linked them to Action Plans and National Programs to Combat Desertification and Drought, Protect Environment and Foster Development.
